In the aftermath of the killer quake and tsunami in Japan that has spawned a nuclear crisis, the RH proponents persist in forcing upon us a man-made disaster in the form of HB 4244. However, unexpected problems have hounded the bill from the very first day, when technical problems forced Congress to suspend sessions. At the moment, the impeachment and ARMM issues have set back the RH deliberations. These delays can only be to the benefit of the family and the unborn.
Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales has now called for a gathering at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta on March 25, to pray against the passage of the RH bill. Let us not downplay the importance and the urgency of this prayer rally. We must join this assembly spiritually and physically, and turn out in record numbers to register our strongest opposition against the vicious attack on life. On this day we celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation, when Jesus Christ was conceived in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and commemorate the Day of the Unborn Children.   The new program schedule starts at 5:00 PM, with an Interfaith Gathering at 6:00 PM and a Holy Mass at 7:00 in the evening, followed by Praise and Worship from 9:00 PM onwards.
The pro-family forces were successful in 1994 in protesting government promotion of condoms and contraception under President Fidel Ramos. Cardinal Sin and former president Cory Aquino led the prayer rally at the Luneta on August 14, a Sunday. Asiaweek reported that it was the largest demonstration since the ouster of Ferdinand Marcos in 1986, when the two leaders had supported the Ramos-Enrile breakaway from Marcos. The magnitude of that crowd, over one million strong, forced the government to backpedal on its aggressive family planning policy. That massive gathering criticized the scheduled International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo and compelled the government to clarify that it was not promoting abortion and that it supported the Church on family values. It was also in Luneta where Cardinal Sin and Cory Aquino joined forces once more to denounce the planned Charter Change in 1997. Again, that mammoth rally stopped President Ramos from pursuing his political plans. In the Church, Luneta bears the distinct honor of holding the largest papal audience in history, when more than five million people thronged to attend the Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II in January 1995 to close the World Youth Day in Manila.
We are called upon once more to pour out in large numbers to the Luneta and stand up against the culture of death. Let us show the world the power of our convictions. We can move mountains on the strength of our faith. We can defend the family and protect the unborn.
Be at the Luneta on March 25, 2011.
